My grand-daughter loves to play hockey (#34).
The following is a short story of her version of the assassination attempt on Hitler in 1944 in which we have a distant family connection.
Shae’s Version of Valkyrie
By Shae McDade (as an 8 year old)
So there was a little girl who was about 12 years old and when she got older she got married to this man and that man was part of a plan to kill Hitler with a bunch of other men. And this one guy was my Mom’s great great uncle1. They called him a hero because he was the person who got the closest to Hitler. So he set the bomb in Hitler’s suitcase under the table. But Hitler didn’t like where it was and then they opened the window so it made the bomb not really go off. So he didn’t die but he did get injured. But Hitler thought that the people who were trying to kill him were people pretending to be on his side. But then somehow Hitler found out that my Mom’s great great uncle set the bomb and when the men who were trying to kill Hitler were talking altogether and Hitler came and the other men ran away in time but not my Mom’s great great uncle. And they shot him. Then the next day, Hitler’s people who were forced to be in the army all died and he knew that he would lose and he shot himself.
The end.
1 Shae’s Mom’s great great uncle was Berthold von Stauffenberg, who was married to Marie Klassen (Classen) one of Shae’s Mom’s great grandpa’s half sister. It was Berthold’s brother, Claus, who planted the bomb in the Wolf’s Lair beside Hitler. A year after this assassination attempt in 1945, Hitler did commit suicide.
