Emigration to Canada
On arrival in Canada in 1924 (Harry was one year old), settlement was organized through the Canadian government (Liberal at the time) via sponsorships from North American Mennonites. Certain large farms in Saskatchewan were divided into ½ section parcels for the immigrants. Ours was on the southern limits of the large farm (Schwager #2) and closest to the village of Dundurn. A house and barn had to be built.
The American Red Cross was able to get 20,000 refugee Mennonites to Canada out of 200,000. Over the Stalin period, most of the Mennonites who remained were sent to Siberia and perished.
